PRACTICAL ROOFING GUIDE

How to match a replacement roof tile

Color is only one part of a tile match. Material, profile, dimensions and how adjacent tiles fit together also matter.

Start with records you already have

A previous invoice, spare tile packaging or original roof specification may identify the manufacturer and product. Photograph a spare tile only if it is already safely accessible. Do not lift installed tiles yourself to look for markings. Give the contractor both a close image of the spare and a wider view showing the installed pattern.

A visual match is not a compatibility decision

Two tiles can have similar colors but different interlocks, shapes or fastening provisions. Ask the contractor to identify the product and explain compatibility with the existing installation and applicable requirements. Florida product approval records and the selected manufacturer’s instructions are more useful than a claim that a tile is simply “close enough.”

If the original tile is unavailable

Ask what replacement stock can actually be obtained, in what quantity and with what expected variation. Salvaged stock should be assessed for suitability; its availability does not guarantee that it can be used on your roof. Compare a localized repair, a clearly described larger repair, or replacement only after understanding material constraints. Discontinued stock by itself does not determine insurance coverage.

Agree on appearance before ordering

Weathering can make new stock look different even when the product is compatible. Request an available sample or clear photograph and decide how much variation you accept. Put the chosen product, quantity, exclusions and approval process for substitutions in writing. Keep suitable spare tiles after work if storage is practical.

Your takeaway: Ask for the actual proposed tile and the reason it is compatible before accepting a repair based on color alone.
